4 Powerful Sessions with Q&A
Day 1 Session 1 - Introducing the Spiritual Solution to Addiction
We are taught that addiction is a result of low Eeman (belief in Allah) and that if we pray more, fast more, do more charity, then we will recover from all the ailments of the heart and finally recover from the suffering of addiction. Yet so many Muslims struggle to achieve that and feel defeated. This session will introduce the missing link to recovery that makes it possible for everyone, in sha Allah.
Kathryn Jones and Harry Derbitsky will share their stories of how they came to learn about the "Three Principles" psychological and spiritual understanding that is the solution to all emotional and spiritual ailments. You will discover the profound ways in which it can change lives, and has changed theirs, for good. It can change your life too, even if you are suffering from addiction.
Kathryn Jones will shed light on why you can let go of the judgment, criticism and the alienation people experience from those around them when they fail to overcome addiction. Recovery is not based on willpower and increased ritual worship alone, as is commonly preached, there is an internal shift that is required to make it possible. Just as Allah says “Verily, Allah will not change the condition of a people as long as they do not change the condition within themselves” [al-Ra’d 13:11].
Harry Derbitsky will explain addiction and the possibility to recover completely from it by sharing his 4 stages of recovery from addiction. His extensive work in this area will shed light on why people struggle with addiction and how possible it is for anyone to recover from it. This session will be enlightening for those who are close to or work with someone who is struggling with addiction as well.
Day 1 Session 2 - Discovering the Hope of Recovery
Hopelessness leads to a darkness that covers the soul. When hope is restored, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The beginning of the journey to recovery is having hope.
Addiction Through an Islamic Lens
Professor Mohamad Abdalla will share from an Islamic perspective the importance of overcoming addiction, how our Islamic teachings help in addiction recovery and how the Prophet (peace be upon him) handled these challenges with compassion. In sha Allah.
Is Addiction a Chronic Disease?
Harry Derbitsky will dispel myths about addiction being a disease that has to be forever managed and whether trauma is the root cause of addiction and therefore trauma therapy is required to recover. He will talk about Stigma and Harm Reduction Approaches or Medically Aided Treatment (MAT). In this important session you will discover just how simple the solution really is!
Personal and Professional Stories of Addiction Recovery
Harry with 2 guest speakers (You will meet them on the day!). Our first speaker will share his story of full recovery from addiction through the understanding of the "Three Principles" psychological paradigm. Our second guest is a doctor who works on the frontline of addiction and shares his professional experience of what he has witnessed of patient recovery.
Day 2 Session 1 - One Cause, One Solution the Islamic Way
We love to believe that the problem is complex because it has made such a mess of our lives. We hear rhetoric that has us believe it will take us a lifetime to find peace and happiness when we are in such deep chaos. The truth is, the solution is actually very simple, and it is a possibility is for everyone ... and it is perfectly in alignment with our Deen (Islamic way of life).
Are the "Three Principles" Compatible with Islam?
Rayesa Gheewala and Kathryn Jones will demonstrate through their own experiences and by discussing some of the "Three Principles" teachings of Sydney Banks (founder of the "Three Principles" movement) that this understanding of our human experience is not only compatible with Islam, it in fact deepens our experience of Taqwa (consciousness of Allah), Tarbiyyah (soul to soul nurturing other to good) and Tawakkul (total submission and trust in the Qadr (divine destiny) of Allah.
Addiction: One Cause One Solution
Barbara Smith, the author of the book "Addiction: One Cause, One Solution" will share with you the simplicity of this solution to addiction recovery. She has worked in this field for decades and her discovery of the "Three Principles" led to a profound shift in how she was able to help those suffering from addiction to a full recovery.
